Projects in week through 12-7-14

House Capuchin Shield2This coming weekend is Summits Winter Investiture, so House Capuchin spent this past week putting largesse projects together so that their Highnesses will have enough to work with. We have a whole pile of things and the guys are all piling into one car for the event, just daytripping, which is going to be a long drive, but they’re pretty excited about it.

Everything still needs to be labelled, but that’s waiting for printer ink.

This week Thursday afternoon into the evening is Sewing Time. We might be working on garb if we have the largesse stuff ready. Saturday’s Herb Bunch is making potpourri and then we have our regular Project Time on Sunday, when we’ll probably be talking a

lot about Investiture, 12th Night and about the potluck feast that we’re having on 12/21. Hands are still needed to help with the cutting out of the stuff for the totes, and you can learn a bunch about Anja’s period toy research.

Report for Project Day 8-3-14 is up

House Capuchin Shield2You can find the full report here: https://housecapuchin.wordpress.com/portfolio/report-project-day-8-3-14/

080314 bunniesThe bunnies are done!!!!

We started the day with talking about our various projects and the modern version of the plague (i.e. the ebola epidemic), and then setting up the “shopping list” for the fighter kits that we’re putting together.

Formed

Formed

At that point everyone started picking up projects to work on. Marcus was making fibulae and ended up with 12 pair. Anja cut the felt that Sabrina donated to attach them to. Loren still has to grind the points, but effectively they’re done.

Kim started working on another needle and got it finished. Loren had a blank that he started and got about 1/2-way done during the day, iow pretty well done with the carving, although it will still need sanding.  8 needles and 5 cases done.

New motif

Anja was working on embroidery at that point, more pincushions and had to do some ironing, because some of the fabrics had really bad fold lines.

Anja also did up a sample Lady’s Mantle sachet and the photos for it, as well as cutting the fabrics. Gaia had brought some rose sachets in and left the bottle, so Anja cut some more fabrics for those.

Anja did a talk on Largesse, what it meant in period and the use of it in the SCA and the associations and customs relating to it… including some of the problems, like “largesse creep”, the inflation of quantities, rather than quality.

080314 perfume salve 07After that Kim and Anja headed into the back to make perfume salve. The one they created was rose petals, sandalwood oil, storax and a little rose absolute (in jojba oil) all mixed into the Brambleberry brand perfume base. In period it probably would have been a grease or oil mixed with beeswax, but the commercial base keeps longer. They poured it into small view tins (20) and each got a rosebud pushed into the salve on top and had enough left over for 5 baby food jars for later. ….and they smelled awesome for the rest of the day! The 20 view tins all fit into one large tin, so the cards are going to get put into the large tin to be handed out with the little tins.

Loren whittling

We sat awhile mostly working on needles (only 2 left to finish!) and Anja getting a few more photos and talked over some new projects including the rolling storage boxes. We’re thinking to make a fancy one of cedar with a flame-stitched cushion, (along with Anja’s of some inherited mahogany), but most will probably be plain pine with fabric-covered cushions. =

Kim needed to go feed Ruby, so Loren and Marcus took over the back to get dowels and finishing touches into the inkle looms. 080314 inkle 100We’re taking those to the CdV fight practice on Tuesday to hand them off for the archery event where the class is going to be. And they are *complete*! …and stashed in Marcus’ car….

We didn’t get as far as the block printing, the lotion bars and the snip cases, but Anja is going to start on the latter during the week and at next week’s Project Day there will be the lotion bars and washing balls, maybe even a bruise salve.

There was also Headcloth and Wax Tablet progress

Report Project Day 6-15-14

House Capuchin Shield2Project Day this week was really productive! The full write-up is here: https://housecapuchin.wordpress.com/portfolio/report-project-day-6-15-14/  and other projects in the portfolio here:  https://housecapuchin.wordpress.com/portfolio/

...and done, even with the slot!

…and done, even with the slot!

We’re making Inkle Looms for a class that is supposed to happen at an event in the Barony of Three mountains in August. They’re cut and drilled, 160 holes! Sanding and dowels are what’s left.

Done and bagged!

Done and bagged!

The largesse projects that are going to Investiture are the rose petal sachets that Gaia has been making and bunch of bead-filled, block-printed, hand-stitched pouches done by Sabrina, Anja and Gaia.

The fabrics were donated by Anja and Gaia, beads by Sabrina, Anja and Loren, the block printing done by Gaia, Marcus and Anja and then and Anja, Gaia and Sabrina all worked on them, as time permitted.

Checking the needle fit

Checking the needle fit

On Saturday Loren and Anja got the materials together to start the needlecases for the bone needles. We decided to go with two piece pegged ones. They need to be drilled for the pegs, then those and the closures be inserted.

…and pennons, and dressing bunnies, and spinning and we even cut some rattan…

Gaia and Marcus and Tablut

Gaia and Marcus and Tablut

So games happened at the end of the day, starting with Tablut and ending with Tablero, played by Gerhardt’s rules.

…and lots of ideas came up, as usual! …and after coming up with some dirty limericks, and discussing a Catullus poem (in Latin) that Marcus found….that had Marcus and Anja in stitches, it’s that vile…. we all went home just wiped out tired!

Next week is our monthly potluck feast, then the following week’s theme is leatherwork, July 6 is possibly on fiber arts and then heraldry on 7/13 and then we’re back to a potluck! Hey….we’re developing a calendar….that’s scary! 🙂

Report – Project Day – 5-11-14

House Capuchin Shield2I cut this post down. The main post (the original writing!) is over on the Project Day – 5-11-14 page!

Ending the day - Progress!

Ending the day – Progress!

The day started early with some folks up at Marcus’ shop working on armor plates and Anja working on the wax tablet.

The pile

The pile

After everyone gathered we spent awhile talking about the furniture projects, trying to decide what’s best for what and priority, and then some folks took off to go put up the pell and the rest of us working on a fabric sorting thing, labeling things and getting them put where they need to be, like the green linen that’s going to be block printed and made into pouches for largesse and the pieces for a linen apron and coifs…..

three leg folding stool

We decided that the rope bed, rolling box chair and some “sitting boxes” were top priority with some 3-legged folding stools also on the list. The leather for those is going to be on the field trip shopping list.

Drilling the holes. One is only part-way.

Loren holding forth

No recorder lesson, today. Marcus had to go because it was Mother’s Day, so the rest of us settled into working on the bone needles while we talked about the officers of the SCA, who is what and what they do, and the Tempus gave us a talk about his sundials. He’s made a number of drawings.

We needed a break after that for our hands, and ended up talking over some of the stamps that Anja had, to decide what to use for the block printing for our first effort and then cutting out and sanding a couple of blocks.

Cut and sanded blocks (as far as we got!)

2nd run we’ll cut our own pattern, but for the first try we have a pretty leaf pattern and another star pattern.

051114 shortbread

There was a long discussion about weaponry that went on up front while Anja and Gaia were working on herbs in back and then on embroidery. We ended up at the end of the day sortof sitting and looking at each other, quite worn out! Shortbread helps with that.

There was also a funny during the afternoon. Anja’s been talking with a merchant who decided to sell out her stock about bringing some of it up to put in the “SCA corner” and she brought it in during the afternoon. One thing that we didn’t keep for the shop were these amazing light fixtures. 🙂
